Beta-secretase 1 (BACE1) is a transmembrane aspartic protease that plays a crucial role in the production of beta-amyloid peptides, which are thought to contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease. Dysregulation of BACE1 activity has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, making it an attractive target for drug development. Several small molecule inhibitors and antibodies that target BACE1 are currently in development and are being evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
