HIV-1 RT (reverse transcriptase) is an enzyme found in the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It plays a critical role in the replication of the virus by converting the viral RNA genome into DNA, which can then be integrated into the host cell's genome. HIV-1 RT is a well-established drug target because it is essential for the replication of the virus. Inhibition of HIV-1 RT can prevent the conversion of viral RNA to DNA, thereby stopping the replication of the virus. Several drugs that target HIV-1 RT have been developed and are widely used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection.
