VEGF receptor-2 (vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2) is a transmembrane protein that plays a key role in angiogenesis, the process by which new blood vessels are formed from existing ones. Dysregulation of VEGF receptor-2 signaling has been implicated in a number of diseases, including cancer, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration. As a result, VEGF receptor-2 is an attractive target for drug development, and several small molecule inhibitors and monoclonal antibodies that target the receptor are currently in clinical use or development.
